Multifocal contact lenses are generally designed to provide myopic patients with clear vision at all distances. However, these specialty contact lenses can also help slow the progression of myopia in certain children. For example, a two-year study conducted in 2013 found that nearsighted children who wore multifocal lenses on a daily basis had a 50% reduction in myopia progression when compared to similar children who only wore standard soft contact lenses.

Multifocal eyeglasses work in the same way as multifocal contact lenses and have also been demonstrated to slow the progression of nearsightedness in some children.

Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K, is a method for temporarily reshaping the cornea with custom contact lenses in order to correct myopia. While your child sleeps, the specially-designed contact lenses will reshape the cornea (which is the front surface of the eye), allowing your child to see clearly the next day without any lenses. Studies have found that Ortho-K reduces the lengthening of the eyeball (a key factor in myopia progression) by 43% in children when compared to similar children who only wore regular eyeglasses for myopia correction.
